THEY DON'T KNOW


Today there's someone out there
Who doesn't know this pain.
But before the sun sets
Their child will not remain.

I saw them only yesterday.
They didn't understand.
But come tomorrow morning
They'll need a helping hand.

They can't perceive this sorrow
Until they hear that news
That turns their safe world upside down
Into a life they'd never choose.

I remember being one of them
Oblivious to depths of grief.
Living life with unscathed hope
When existence was naive.

I wonder how life would have been
If death hadn't crossed my path?
Would I have stayed so unaware
Of the grief that others have?

I guess I've learned the hard way,
Sometimes life can change so fast.
Someone else will soon find out
Just how precious is the past.
